One of the most incredible landmarks in Ho Chi Minh City is actually not Vietnamese in origin at all, rather, it was left by the French colonialists. This is, of course, the Notre Dame Cathedral of Ho Chi Minh City. Accompanied by two huge towers, this red brick monolith towers over the traffic which streams by on either side of the cathedral.

The interior is said to be fairly subdued, though this does not correlate to the atmosphere during times of worship. The cathedral can be quite packed during service hours, and can be very loud, with a jovial, celebratory, and almost party like atmosphere. While the French colonialists left the country of Vietnam in the 20th Century, they’ve certainly left their mark on the Vietnamese landscape and Vietnamese culture itself. Sunday mass takes place every week at 9:30 in the morning, and the building can be found at the northernmost end of Dong Khoi Avenue, where it is impossible to miss.
