In West Lake in Hanoi you will find a peninsula pointing right into the lake itself, and on the tip of the peninsula, you will find the Tay Ho Pagoda. The pagoda was built in the 17th century and named for the surrounding Tay Ho neighborhood. The local legend has it that a pretty girl appeared standing on the West Lake before a fisherman. There, she recited poetry to him and disappeared without revealing her identity to the fisherman. When the fisherman shared this story with the other locals, they realized that this mysterious girl had been none other than Thanh Mau, the Mother Goddess, and so, the temple was built in her honor.

Of course, whether you buy into tall tales or not, the pagoda is a sight to behold. West Lake is a very popular, affordable place to rent a boat and explore, and besides the natural beauty of the area, the Tay Ho Pagoda also lends the lake some important cultural significance
