The Dong Xuan Market, a wholesale gathering site for vendors and buyers alike, is said to be the oldest and largest market in the entire country of Vietnam, occupying an entire one half of Dong Xuan Street. Perhaps the most important piece of the Hanoi economy, the market formed thanks to the river networks which feed this area of the city, with the market being located at the confluence of the Red River and the To Lich River. The market was once amongst the very busiest areas in all of Southeast Asia.
Thanks to its ever increasing size and cultural relevance, the Dong Xuan Market has been through a few rennovations. Early on, the French built a fence around the area to make it easier to collect taxes from the vendors, then in 1889, a structure was built over the market area and the market was organized into five different areas with specific categories of goods and services being sold at each, and in 1992, the entire market was heavily rennovated to have a more modern appearance.
