The Tran Quoc Pagoda is set upon an island linked by a bridge to the land between the scenic West Lake and Tran Bach Lake. While commonly cited as the oldest pagoda in Vietnam, the pagoda was actually not built until the early sixth century, predated by several other pagodas throughout the country. Although, when it was built, during the Ly Dynasty, it was actually constructed next to the Red River. It was moved here to the island on West Lake in the 17th Century.

In the gardens near the Tran Quoc Pagoda, you will find a bodhi tree. This tree is said to have grown from a cutting which was taken from none other than the original tree which Buddha himself sat under when he achieved enlightenment. Because of the sacredness of this site, decent attire is expected, with long pants being required of male visitors, rather than shorts.
