Old Nickel Hotel Amsterdam    

hotel very clean and central and close to all amenities. very freidly staff and very close to central station. Resdtaranrts all around are very good and reasonable. A good base for exploring a fantastic city

We were hugely disappointed in this hotel as they were not friendly and the website description did not match what you get in any way. There are old, steep, narrow stairs that are very difficult to negotiate with luggage, let alone any movement disability! The guy who checked us in was repeatedly rude, insisting I'd been sent an email verifying some services did NOT exist which the website says DO exist and repeated 4 times "you were sent an email that if you didn't like it, you could cancel!" Was that really necessary to state so rudely, when I clearly received no such email and if I had, would have jumped at the chance to cancel at such a rude response!? Wow, if that's the way you speak and email to your customers, I'm amazed you have any business at all! The only reason this dump has any business is because people are desperate to stay in the heart of Amsterdam! We found an unbelievably nice hotel elsewhere for a LOT less money and LOTS more services with incomparable customer service!!! The ONLY redeeming feature of the OLD NICKEL (appropriately named because this is what it's worth) was a nice, hot omelet for breakfast and the guy working in the bar in the evening, who was friendly. The guy during the day who checked us in most definitely greeted us with a ton of attitude for no reason whatsoever on my part. I tried very hard to remain pleasant and explain the information and reasoning for my booking and dismay that the premises did not offer anything close to what was represented. I would NOT recommend this hotel if anything else within 20 miles is available!!! You can ride the trams very cheaply and get to the city from a comfortable hotel outside the city center and not put up with the noise, filth and even danger (of the stairs) of this dump! The rooms are tiny with no place to put your luggage, the beds are terrible with old stained and saggy mattresses, the sheets and bed covers all had cigarette burns and stains, the sink in the room is badly cracked, the toilet is tiny and there's no way I would risk disease by using the shower room in the hallway which doubles as a cleaning closet! They didn't even have any blankets for us! The hallways and stairs reek of pot and hash smoke, which I realize is common in the Red Light District, but their check- in paperwork threatens a huge fine for smoking in your room so there's obviously no enforcement. We are not picky people at all but this place is a dump!

Stayed here last week for 2 nights. Had triple room, room clean sheets and bedding clean. Was a bit concerned about shared bathroom but looked clean only really used it once. Breakfast nice, staff really friendly. Hotel just 3 mins walk away from train station, good price for very central location.

Very good hotel with friendly staff and a perfect location. Clean toilets and showers with a pub standard breakfast. Considering it was just over 40euros per night for a solo traveller in the centre of Amsterdam it is a fantastic hotel. There is a bar/pub with live music too. However it is worth remembering that this hotel is right in the centre and is very close to karaoke bars/pubs etc so if you want a perfect, early nights sleep then get a hotel in the suburbs. Would definitely recommend it and will be certain to come again.

The tagline says it all. Very friendly staff (always smiling & helpful), tasty breakfast (bacon & egg omelette, bread & jam, tea/coffee), and cool little bar open til 4am if you fancy it. Live music some Saturday nights, which can be a little loud, but doesn't seem to go on too late. Stayed 3 times. Smoking IS allowed in rooms ("out of the window, please!"). Free WiFi in the main building. All in all, very good.

Staff were very hospitable, the bar is fantastic and the hotel is all you require in Amsterdam . Excellent location, only fault if any would be the cost but that's cities! I would certainly recommend this hotel to others!

++ location is top: 5 minutes walk away from central station, right at the beginnng of the redlight district. perfect base to explore amsterdam at day and night.+ the staff was friendly and helpful-- i booked a single room for two nights for 62,50€/night. what i got was nothing more than a 5 sqm cubby hole on the second floor with the window facing the street. it was very noisy,.. i wouldn´t have had any chance to sleep if i didn´t use earplugs. i traveled with two friends who stayed in a double room wich was just a bit larger than mine. besides the good location you don´t get a lot of value for your money. as i´ve stayed in a couple of other hotels arround that area i would not recommend booking your stay at the old nickel.--

We stayed here for just under a week and found the service to be excellent and friendly. Always happy to point out the best places to eat and party. The pub under neath the hotel had a fantastic atmosphere and always enjoyed a drink with the friendly locals and the live bands that played. The room was small but perfect for us, a place to sleep and keep our bags safe. Just on the edges of the red light district, it was walking distance from everything major. I would definately stay here again if given the opportunity and recommend anyone to stay here looking for a slice of Amsterdam.

This is usually a very good place!people are helpfull and the hotel is on a good location. but this time customers were without any respect .. potatoes and drinks in stairs, noise... but hotel s staff try to do their best and thank them!!

The Old Nickel has a great location, right in the heart of Amsterdam. Rooms are clean and a decent size. Breakfast is quite tasty. Staff are friendly enough and for the price, it was decent value for money.

Hi! Solo travel I went to Amsterdam for a short weekend. The accomoditation is a Pub with rooms on the 1st and 2nd floor, in a PERFECT location 5 min by walk from the Central Station, and between 5 -20 min by walk from the main attraction of the city - Dam square, Ann Frank house, Red district line, Rembrant museum, Nemo...etc! People are friendly and helpful, expecially, Albert who speaks a perfect English! I found NICE live music on Friday and Saturday until 2am! I can say I really enjoyed my stay!

Nice service, like "at home", small but cozy room. Good location near citi centre at the same time rather quiet.

I recommendgreat location, close to everything, nice people, but very small room and guests are noisy at nightand if your travel bag is great look for another hotel

I visited with my thirteen year old granddaughter. I had to register in the bar. While we were registering, three customers ordered beer and other alcoholic drinks with my early teen granddaughter present. We had to carry two heavy suitcases up a close quartered staircase three flights. The room was so small we could not fit our two suitcases in there with the twin beds. Realizing we could not cancel the first night, we asked to cancel our second night since it was almost thirty hours early. They refused to allow us to cancel our reservations and would not return our money. Breakfast was served in the bar. It might be ok for adults, but I would not recommend this place for anyone with a child or a health issue who cannot climb steep stairs.

Friendly,cosy hotel, bedroom was comfortable,and all that I needed.Great location, breakfast was a little disappointing.Not good for people who have problems getting up steep stairs.Will stay again next time I'm in Amsterdam

Great location, very accessible from the central train station and all main tourist attractions. Rooms are average, gets noisy at night (construction) but overall an average stay. Good stay for the money!

Budget and location were important to us so we booked the Old Nickel, close to Central Station and the city center. Considering the budget price, we were very satisfied with our stay. The service was friendly, and the room (although basic) suited our needs perfectly. The price you pay for the central location is of course a bit of noise, and the windows are only single glazed so light sleepers might struggle. This wasn't really a problem for us. I'd recommend the Old Nickel for sure, so long as you are realistic with your expectations- It's not five star!

especially if you want to party with friends, not to have a romantic stay as a couple! The bar is nice, with good and quite cheap beers

Conveniently situated between the train station and red light district, friendly and accommodating staff, and great place to have a few beers in also.
