Grenville House Hotel London    

I would not stay or wish my worst enemy to stay in this hotel or at no 6 Glanville House Hotel??!!! This is a 2* hotel not a 3* as initially advertised when we booked and it certainly DOES NOT deserve the 2 it has! We eventually figured out that we had to check in at no 6 - 2 doors up, so lugged our cases back up the street to find our room was not ready when we arrived at 4pm (despite advertising you can check in from 12pm), so we were asked to wait in the Breakfast room. This had not been cleaned from the mornings breakfast, the counter tops still had crumbs and marks on, the kitchen was also in a state (we did not have the breakfast there the next morning for fear of catching something nasty)!!! Despite implying that the hotel had it's own dining area for Breakfast this is actually 2 doors up the street at no 6. After a 30min wait, we were directed to our room on the first floor, which reeked of air freshner that you could smell as you entered the front door (i expect a whole can had been emptied) this was trying to mask the stench of strong cigarette smoke which was in EVERYTHING - even though the sheets were clean they still stank of smoke - which is fine if you are a heavy smoker, but i am not! We could not leave the window open or have it wide open all night for fresh air because our room was right at the front of the building facing the road which is quite a busy road, all night. The bathroom was NOT a bathroom - more like a wet cubicle with no room to manover or bend over the sink with the door closed - using the toilet was a mission in itself!!! The tea and coffee facilities in the room were non-existent. They take payment from you as soon as you check in which should have rung alarm bells instantly (as most hotels you pay on checking out) - I expect it's because people just leave without paying and I certainly wouldn't blame them - it is definately NOT money well spent. If the weather had not been so bad after our show we would have driven the 3 hours back home. The hotel was the only total disappointment for my mother's birthday surprise. In future we will be paying that little bit extra if we ever have to stay in London again and stay in a well known hotel chain.

Pros: Family room was large, infact it was the biggest room in 5 european cities we stayed (london, paris, brugge, brussels, frankfurt). staff was very helpful and responsive.
Cons: Shower / bathroom was not of the kind you would find in the us, they were similar to what you might find in an rv or mobile home. sheets, blankets, bedspread were well used and could be updated or replaced.

Cons: The room and bathroom was very old, had a funny smell and mug in the bathroom

room cleanliness... the maid hardly cleaned are room and when she did it wasnt done properly
safety... we were in the room one afternoon and 2 men opened on us, imagine we weren't there! could have stolen anything!!!
first couple of days we were given this room which was under the street, it was smelly, small and not adequate to stay in, tv didn't work... they only changed the room because hotel wasn't as busy... and he asked for more money which we clearly didn't give him
no... never again... many more good hotels in different areas for around the same price!

Cons: Little variation in breakfast, some guests were loud and could be heard all night, small shower and toilet, not much space.
