Anyone who stays in hotels in Dessau quickly learns of its reputation as the former capital of the duchy of Anhalt-Dessau. This area is known for its beautiful Baroque churches and Johannbau, the remains of a Renaissance ducal residence. This structure, built in the 1920's, based on a design by Walter Gropius, was the home to the famous Bauhaus art school. There is the Hugo Junkers Technical Museum featuring designs, industrial equipment and related items of interest. You can visit the Kornhaus, restored in 1996 or go to Schloss Georgium, home of various old master paintings including Rubens and Hals. You can also venture to Haldeburg just outside Dessau, Mosigkau, boasting Schloss Mossikau, the Baroque residence of Princess Anna Wilhelmina or Oranienbaum with its early Baroque –style palace.
