After Dubai, Abu Dhabi has the second highest population in the United Arab Emirates. Close to 1 million people live on the T shaped island on the Persian Gulf, which is the seat of government for the Abu Dhabi emirate. It is also one of the largest oil producers in the world and has become known as a world investment and financial center. Most recently, the city has become a tourist site as well.
Abu Dhabi would like to see itself as the cultural hub of the Middle East. This attempt has included the creation of the Cultural Foundation, home to the UAE Public Library and Cultural Center. The National Theater is often the site of music and cultural performances, and Saadiyat Island is scheduled to open a Guggenheim Museum by 2011, showcasing modern and contemporary art.
