What you need to know before traveling to Utah

The State of Utah is on the western side of the United States. The state has vast areas of totally uninhabited land. Utah comes from the Indian word ‘Ute’ which means ‘people of the mountains’. Utah covers 84,889 square miles and had an estimated 2,645,330 inhabitants in 2007. It ranges from 2178 feet at Beaver Dam Wash to 13,528 feet at King’s peak. It is very bio-diverse with arid deserts, pine forests and high mountains. Eighty percent of Utah’s population live around the capital, Salt Lake City and the majority of these inhabitants follow the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Mormon religion, founded by Joseph Smith in 1847. Utah’s main commerce is transportation, information technology, government services, mining and tourism. Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park attract many tourists and film-makers. In the winter months some of the best skiing can be found at the Alta Ski area. This encouraged the development of TRAX, a light rail system.
